My family (wife, sister-in-law and myself) visited Coupar Angus recently as we are tracing the Pennycook family roots.
We know that the Pennycooks lived at 31 George Street in the 1901 census and Burnside Cottage, George Street in the 1911 census.
Does anyone know if the Burnside Cottage property still exists today?. A Google search says it is number 50 but is this is likely to be correct?.
Of particular interest in the Pennycook family is Andrew Craigie Pennycook (Jnr.) who was born at 5:00 AM on Sunday, 6th August 1911 in Burnside Cottage. Andrew Craigie Pennycook (Jnr.) is my sister-in-law's father. Andrew Craigie Pennycook's father was also called Andrew Craigie Pennycook (Snr.) and was born in 1870 in Precinct Street. He married Mary Ann Flynn who was living at 42 (and a half?) Causewayend at the time of their marriage in 1891 in Aberdeen.
We visited Abbey Churchyard and found many graves for the Pennycook family dating back to early 1900s. We were very pleased to find both Andrew Craigie Pennycook (Snr.) and his father Robert Pennycook who was a joiner at Lintrose House and lived for a while at West Lodge, Lintrose House with his wife Susan Craigie Pennycook. We also found the grave of Alexandrina Pennycook , Andrew Craigie's (Jnr.) elder sister born in 1896.
Andrew Craigie Pennycook (Jnr.) joined the Territorial Army in 1939 in Dundee and served (possibly with the Royal Engineers) during WW2 with campaigns in North Africa, Italy and France. Somehow Andrew Craigie Pennycook (Jnr.) moves down South and marries Vera May Blows (my wife's mother) in Grays, Essex in 1946 and they lived in South Ockendon, Essex where unfortunately he dies prematurely in 1957 from lung cancer aged 46.
We know that Andrew Craigie Pennycook's (Jnr.) mother Mary Ann Flynn died at 7 Hillgarden in 1946.
My sister-in-law has no recollection of her father Andrew Craigie Pennycook (Jnr.) as she was born in 1956 and was only 1 year old when he died, hence the reason for our recent trip to Coupar Angus.
We know that one of Andrew Craigie Pennycook's sisters (Annie Flynn Pennycook) married a police constable from Stanley, Robert Mackenzie in the Railway Hotel, Coupar Angus in 1931. They moved into 1 Middlehills sometime after the wedding. We had lunch at the Red House Hotel during our visit as we believe this was the original site of the Railway Hotel.
We wondered if anyone may be aware of any Pennycook's still living in Coupar Angus area?. We noticed in Abbey Church that Alexander Pennycook died in 2009, only 12 years ago. From our extensive family tree research carried out during lockdown we know that Alexander is a paternal first cousin of my sister in law.
Any information gratefully received.
Many Thanks
